How To Rotate UTV Tires? Complete Guide

I realized my UTV tires were wearing unevenly, so I rotated them using the forward cross pattern.

UTVs or Utility Terrain Vehicles are exclusively designed to ride in all kinds of terrain, especially harsh and irregular ones.

Thus, its entire body design, including the vehicle’s weight, alignment, types of wheels, etc., has to be designed to provide the best experience in off-road and trail riding.

At the same time, the vehicle’s design must also provide the maximum possible security.

Tires are an important component of every UTV because it is the only part of the vehicle in contact with the ground surface.

Rotating the tires of UTV is the best way to improve its performance and longevity. How to rotate UTV tires?

There is no universal mode of tire rotation because the manner in which the tire rotates depends on various factors.

The different modes on rotating tires include rotation in a forward cross pattern, left rear to right front, left rear to left front, etc.

However, Rotating UTV tires has to be done regularly so that you rotate the tires after a specific mileage is covered.

Rotating side by side tires can either be done by ourselves or with the help of an expert mechanic.

As per expert opinion, getting your tires rotated every 3000 to 5000 miles is advisable.

Since the rotation pattern of tires is greatly dependent on the tires’ size, here is a list of the tire sizes of some popular UTV models.

UTV Tire Rotation Direction

UTV Tire Rotation Direction

How To Rotate UTV Tires depends on many factors, and the combined effect of all these factors determines the direction in which UTV tires have to be rotated.

The most important factor determining the direction of rotation is the type of tire you are using on your vehicle.

The type and quality of tire can vary due to different reasons such as thickness differences, differences that come with different brands, differences in quality, etc.

So, the type of tire used is an important determinant of its direction of rotation. Moreover, the limit distance at which the tires need to be rotated or repositioned depends on the type of tire used.

Another important factor determining the direction of rotation is the type of vehicle you use, whether it is front, rear, all, four-wheel drive, etc.

Moreover, in some vehicles, there might be a size difference between the front and rear tires, such as smaller tires in the front and comparatively larger ones towards the rear.

Such factors also determine the direction of rotation. The pressure maintained in these tires also has a great role in determining tire rotation direction.

Apart from that, the design of vehicles can also influence direction. Some vehicles may be designed in such a way that it exerts much pressure either on the front tires or on the rear tires.

On the other hand, some vehicles will be designed in such a way that it exerts even pressure on all tires.

All these factors are to be considered while determining the direction of rotation.

It is advisable to take the opinion of an expert mechanic regarding this matter if you are not well versed in these matters.

The tire pressure mentioned above in the article greatly depends on the terrain in which it is used.

Purpose/ TerrainTire pressure
Racing20 psi
Trail12 psi
Mud10 psi
Rock crawling8 psi
Sand6 psi
Desert15 psi

I got many valuable information about Tire rotation from this YouTube video.

I followed the expert advice and rotated my UTV tires every 3,000 miles to maximize their lifespan.

How To Adjust UTV Tires?

How To Adjust UTV Tires?

How To Rotate UTV Tires is made by aligning the wheel accordingly. For this purpose, the wheel alignment angles must first be considered.

The wheel alignment angles can be broadly divided into three: camber, caster, and toe.

So, to adjust the UTV tires, the first step is to measure the angle of alignment of the wheels. An alignment machine can be used for the measuring purpose.

After measuring the current alignment of the wheels, the values have to be compared with the actual values.

If the recorded values are found to be different from the actual values, adjustments must be made to the wheel alignment.

The adjustment process can be carried out by following a series of steps.

The steps involved in adjusting vary according to whether the adjustment is made in the camber, caster, or toe.

Several wheel alignment tools and machinery are available in the market, out of which you can choose the required ones and make the purchase.

It would be better to take the advice and service of a technician for such matters as they will be more experienced and well-versed in these types of adjustments.

How To Change UTV Tires?

How To Change UTV Tires?

The tire that is already on the wheel has to be first deflated and then removed. The bead on the tire must break to remove the tire from its rim.

Before mounting the new tire, the rim has to be cleaned thoroughly, and sealer has to be applied to the rim.

The new tire bead has to be applied with the necessary amount of lubrication. After this, the new tire has to be mounted on the cleaned rim. Inflate the new tires, and it’s done.

I swapped the left rear tire with the right front tire to even out the wear on my UTV.

The multi-directional performance of non-directional UTV tires will not be influenced by external conditions such as terrain or speed.

Tire rotation for side by side in non-directional is comparatively an easy process compared to directional tires, whose rotation is confined only to a specific direction.

The advantage of non-directional Tire rotation for side by side is that they can be changed or swapped to any side without much concern.

For How To Rotate UTV Tires both directional and non-directional tires have their own advantages, which will be discussed in the table below.

Directional tiresNon directional tires
Better safetyEasy swapping to all directions
Easy handlingLonger lifespan
More fuel efficientNon noisy performance
More resistance to hydroplaningWorthy use of money
Aggressive tread designEasy operation

Although both have a number of advantages, both have a few disadvantages or cons too.

Directional tiresNon directional tires
Lower resistance to wear and tearNot suited for racing purposes
Noisy performanceLowered technical sophistication
Shorter lifespanNot suited for wet conditions

I jacked up my UTV and carefully rotated the tires in a forward cross pattern to improve traction.

Getting optimal performance out of our vehicle is a true blessing. Rotate tires for UTV can greatly help us have such an optimal performance.

All the tires of our vehicle need not experience the same kind and amount of wearing and tearing.

This is very significant, especially in the case of Utility terrain vehicles.

By UTV tire rotation regularly, the uneven wearing process can disintegrate all tires of the vehicle to a great extent.

Using this process, the tires’ tread life can be greatly improved, which helps in its optimum usage.

At the same time, this disintegration of wear among all the tires can also improve the vehicle’s overall performance.

UTV tire rotation can also make the process of handling the vehicle easy.

Apart from the improved overall performance of the vehicle, certain specific features of the vehicle, such as braking of the vehicle can also be improved to a great extent with regular tire rotation.

If you have any doubt related to How To Rotate UTV Tires then you can just put it in the comment section.

I marked my tires with chalk before rotating them to keep track of their new positions.
