Wisconsin UTV Seat Belt Law

Overview:

The Wisconsin UTV Seat Belt Law requires all operators and passengers of utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) to wear seat belts.

Vehicles Covered:

The law applies to all UTVs, which are defined as motorized off-highway vehicles that are designed to travel on four or more low-pressure tires, have a steering wheel, and seating designed to be straddled by the operator and passengers.

Seat Belt Requirements:

The law requires that all UTV operators and passengers wear a seat belt at all times while the vehicle is in motion.

Enforcement:

Failure to comply with the seat belt law can result in a fine and/or penalty points on the operator's driving record.

Exceptions:

The law does not apply to UTVs that are being operated for agricultural purposes, or to UTVs that are being used in an authorized parade or exhibition.

Safety Benefits:

The use of seat belts in UTVs can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of an accident or rollover.

Importance of Proper Fit:

It is important to make sure that seat belts are properly adjusted and secured to ensure maximum safety in the event of an accident.

Education and Awareness:

To promote compliance with the law and increase awareness of the importance of seat belt use in UTVs, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources provides educational materials and training for UTV operators and passengers.
